Gingivitis is a type of inflammation of the gums. It often causes the gums to become red and swollen and to bleed when they are brushed with a toothbrush or touched. It is often caused when bacteria build up as plaque on your teeth. At Real Good Dental we have a range of treatments for this problem.
If it is not treated promptly, gingivitis can progress and cause the gums to be badly affected. This can lead to abscesses and to teeth becoming loose or even lost. The good news is that gingivitis can often be treated simply through good oral hygiene – brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, using an antiseptic mouthwash and visiting your dentist for regular checkouts. When you visit Real Good Dental, your dentist will assess the condition of your mouth, teeth and gums. If you have gingivitis, then you will be advised on the oral hygiene steps you should take. Your dentist or dental hygienist may also clean your teeth (a process known as scaling and polishing), removing any plaque or tartar (hardened plaque). You may also have a ‘deep clean’ around the roots of your teeth. Where necessary, local anaesthetics will be used to ensure you do not feel any pain during the procedure. In situations where gingivitis is causing severe symptoms, further treatments may be necessary.
